Poison Omen Bird Subjugation Day 13
“Lynne’s grandmother is in critical condition? Or rather, why do you know that, Aransa?” -Ur
“Well, even though they’re only nominally so, the Leyline family descends from the lineage of the White Witch. When you’re in a position like Guild Master, such news naturally reaches your ears.” -Aransa
At the Adventurer’s Guild reception, Ur heard about the incident that had befallen Lynne. And with that, he understood the reality that there was nothing he could do about it.
『What’s this now, that girl, family misfortune? Eh? 』-Rock
“She’s not dead, not yet.” -Aransa
Aransa corrected Rock’s tactless remark. “Not yet,” meaning her grandmother’s situation was certainly precarious. This made it unlikely that she would be able to join them in plunging into the dungeon today.
But what about from tomorrow onward, after she returns?
“What do you think?” -Ur
『How would I know? We haven’t heard anything from the girl yet. 』-Rock
Indeed, they had decided only yesterday to seek more detailed information from her. Today, they were about to have that conversation when the news arrived. The information they had about her came mostly from what they had heard from Aransa.
“What does the Guild Master think?” -Ur
“Well, even I don’t know much about it… but,” -Aransa
“But?” -Ur
“It’s certain that Lynne started walking the path of a ‘Leyline Magician’ because of heavy influence by that old woman… It might be best to brace for the worst.” -Aransa
If the goal of the Leyline’s revival was heavily enforced by the grandmother, her loss could potentially equal the loss of purpose. She might even give up on becoming an adventurer.
To be honest, this was a headache for Ur. He had been considering her “technique” in his tactical planning.
But, however…
“…That said, there’s nothing we can do.” -Ur
Ur stood up from his chair, as if trying to convince himself. Indeed, there was nothing they could do. It would be a complete waste of time to fret over it.
“Guild Master, thank you for the information. If Lynne comes back here, please tell her I want to talk. And Rock, we’re going to the dungeon.” -Ur
“Going to deal with that damn bird again today?” -Aransa
“It’s on pause till the formation of our party, we’ll hunt monsters for money and conduct environmental research.” -Ur
『Understood. Well then, bye, you ill-mannered girl. Haha. 』-Rock
“Show some respect to the Guild Master!!” -Aransa
Ignoring the reprimands thrown by the Guild Master from behind, Ur and Rock headed to the dungeon again today.
“…Unshaken, unwavering, never stopping… that’s his weapon.” -Aransa
Aransa’s small murmur did not reach the two.
◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆
The main house of the Leyline family was located in the northeastern outskirts of the City of Sin, Lust, close to the 【City Barrier】. Beyond the city’s Human Survival Zone, monsters overflowing from dungeons roamed freely, hence inside the barrier was safe. More so, the center of the barrier was considered the safest place.
Despite being 【Priests】, the main house of the Leyline family was inconveniently located away from the center. The place chosen by the ancestors of the Leyline, who were once in the position of a slave race, was said to have been selected to avoid friction with the surrounding areas.
But it wasn’t a bad place. The house, located on a slightly elevated area offering a view of the city center, was the Leyline family’s home to return to, their hometown.
And Lynne knocked on its entrance after a long time.
“Grandma!!” -Lynne
Inside were familiar family faces, unfamiliar relatives, and even strangers. Perhaps acquaintances of relatives, or friends of the grandmother she didn’t know. But whoever they were, Lynne didn’t care. She was being called by someone but didn’t hear them. Lynne headed straight for the room at the back of the first floor, the room of the Leyline family head, the room of Rainkami Nuu Leyline.
“Grandma!!” -Lynne
She was there. Just like before, on a large bed, seemingly asleep. Lynne’s parents were by her side. Her father, Durnan, and her mother, Lylaura, were a bit surprised at Lynne’s appearance and then led Lynne to her grandmother’s side.
“She hasn’t woken up for a while now.” -Durnan
“Hold her hand.” -Lylaura
Lynne, as told, grasped her grandmother’s hand. Thin, bony, dry hands, which were hit more often than caressed. Holding that hand, Lynne spoke again.
“Grandma―” -Lynne
“Lynne.” -Rainkami
Suddenly, with a snap, her grandmother opened her eyes. Instantly, a murmur arose, voices calling for a doctor, and various voices calling the grandmother filled the room. But Lynne heard none of that noise. She stared intently into her grandmother’s sharp eyes. The grandmother also looked at Lynne, and then firmly grasped Lynne’s palm.
“I leave the rest to you.” -Rainkami
Those were her last words.
