Chapter 5 – The Great Tusked Boar (2)

12 minutes

“‘BUUUUUUUUUUUUUMOOOOOOOOOOO!!’”

“Aaaaaaaah!!!” -Ur

As the roar of the Great Tusked Boar echoed, Ur raised his voice, trying to drown out his own fear, and at the same time, he leaped out, drawing the attention of the boar while also attracting its anger. As expected, the boar, which had crushed the door to pieces, turned its gaze towards Ur as he emerged. Its bloodshot eyes and menacing tusks were now directed at him.

“I’m going.” -Woman

Seizing the opportunity, the mysterious girl leaped out from the shattered door. Wearing the slightly loose robe, she moved behind the Great Tusked Boar, which had its gaze fixed on Ur instead of heading towards the exit.

So, she seriously plans on fighting, huh? That woman.

Ur frowned, about to say something, but held back. If she says she can do something, let her do it. Sadly, Ur had no room to be concerned about her. The monster, which was pointing its tusks toward him, was terrifying. He couldn’t afford to spare any attention for her.

The current victory conditions for Ur and his companions were clear:

1. Defeat it.

2. Escape.

They had to achieve one of these. Given their current strength, escape was the only option. Even if they fought and won, since there were no 「True Magic Cores」 to be obtained, it would only be a waste to fight.

The problem was how to escape from the 「Ruler」 in front of them.

They had a countermeasure. Ur took out a vial he found in the warehouse.

“‘BUUUUUMOOO…!’”

“Let it work…!” -Ur

Ur didn’t understand the true nature of the liquid inside the vial. He had no knowledge of pharmacology. All he knew was that the liquid inside was incredibly putrid, emitting an unbearable stench when the bottle was opened.

Yes, a foul smell. When Ur caught a whiff of it, his face twisted, and he felt like he was about to retch from the level of foulness.

“‘BUUUUUUUUUUUMOOOOOOOOO!!’”

That Great Tusked Boar may be an unknown creature, but there must be a reason why that huge nose is peeking between its tusks. It can’t be just for show!

“Take this!” -Ur

As Ur threw the vial, the decaying substance inside scattered, splattering onto the Great Tusked Boar.

“‘BUUUUUU—‘”

The substance in that vial was probably not a poison of any kind. It had simply decayed over a long period of time, to the point where it was impossible to tell what it originally was. However, its effect was tremendous.

“‘BUGYAAAAAAAAAA!!!??!’”

The Great Tusked Boar roared.

Ur, who had little knowledge of monsters, didn’t know this, but the Great Tusked Boar relied on its sense of smell for over ninety percent of its perception. That’s why its eyes were small, and its field of vision was narrow. Its skin was thick, resilient, and lacked sensitivity. Therefore, the damage of having the decaying substance thrust into its nose was immeasurable.

Ur’s prediction was correct.

However,

“‘BUGIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!’”

“Ugh?!” -Ur

Generally, adventurers and knights facing the Great Tusked Boar never try to take away its sense of smell. They don’t attack its clear weaknesses. Why? Because it’s dangerous. Taking away the sense of smell from the Great Tusked Boar, which has long tusks, is…

“‘BUGII

“Ahhhhhhhhhhh?!!!” -Ur

Ur let out a scream as the enormous fangs passed overhead at a terrifying speed. The boar was raging. Perhaps it couldn’t withstand the foul stench. It writhed in agony, thrashing about like a mad creature. Each time, its long tusks scraped the ground, slammed into walls, and impaled into pillars. There was no consistency in its movements. It was impossible to predict its next move. And yet, a direct hit would be fatal.

This, this was worse than being in a sane state!!

Ur grimaced at the outcome of his reckless plan. He had thought that by depriving the boar of its sense of smell, its ability to detect them, they could escape. But with such a long reach, it made no difference whether it could see them or not! It would have been better had it just foolishly charged straight at them!

“Ah, damn it! What do we do!!” -Ur

To make matters worse, the raging boar was near the exit. It was within the range of the wild swinging tusks. They couldn’t avoid the attacks amidst this chaos.

Should they wait until it calms down? But there was no guarantee that it would continue charging in this frenzied state. What should they do?

“Get away!!” -Woman

A woman’s voice rang out. And then she hurled something new. Multiple vials. Was she trying to make things worse!? Before Ur could even think about it, they hit the boar directly.

“BUGII!!”

“….!!” -Ur

The boar began thrashing even more violently. Its tusks grazed against its own body. They were going to die. They would definitely die. Ur couldn’t even let out a scream anymore. He looked toward the woman, wondering what she was going to do. The girl extended both hands forward, preparing to activate magic once again.

“【Sing, flames, and vanquish thine enemies】”

It was as if it were a song, resonating with the magic “chant”.

The magic chant, a technique to deepen and imbue magic power. Was she going to cast a stronger spell than before? Would it be enough to defeat it? Ur didn’t feel that way. The thick, formidable skin that he could tell just by looking at it, it seemed impossible for flames to penetrate it…

“…Hm?”

At that moment, a faint scent drifted into Ur’s nose, which had been paralyzed by the stench.

It wasn’t the smell of decay. It was a scent he remembered. The underground facility had been encroached upon by the dungeon. In the pitch-black space where nothing could be seen without the dungeon’s magic, it would be strange if it didn’t contain what was stored in the warehouse in the back.

Oil!!

Was it truly flammable? Could they use something they had no idea how much time had passed since it was last usable? Various doubts swirled in his head, but he pushed them all aside. He had no time to think. Because the frenzied boar had suddenly turned its body towards the girl.

“BUMOOOO!!”

Whether his nose had recovered, or instinct had kicked in, it was unclear, but it was evident what would happen if they left it as it was. The girl still hadn’t unleashed her magic. Even if she did, she would be crushed and killed if that massive body charged at her.

He had to stop the charge.

It was a split-second decision, but it was the right one for Ur and the girl to surround the boar diagonally. The boar was facing the girl. In other words, its back was turned to Ur. The threat of its tusks was low. But where should he attack?

Ur poised the ritual sword. Fortunately, it wasn’t just a replica in the shape of a sword. It had some cutting power. But that was all. It would be quite a struggle to pierce through this boar’s skin even with a proper weapon. Even if he stabbed the sword into the boar’s backside facing him, he would be swiped away by its tusks before he could inflict any significant damage. Tusks, it’s all about the tusks. If only he didn’t get hit by the tusks–

“――――The back!” -Ur

Ur kicked his legs and lunged toward the boar. He jumped. And as if climbing up, he reached the boar’s back. The back, a place where the tusks definitely couldn’t reach, a safe zone!!

“Darraaaa!!” -Ur

Ur shouted and thrust his sword beneath him. It felt heavy, solid, and dull. There was no sign of the blade penetrating as much as he had anticipated. Taking a deep breath, he put even more weight into the sword, thrusting it deeper with his entire body. There was a sharp tearing sound.

“BUGYA!?”

The Great Tusked Boar halted its charge, writhing in pain as an unexpected surge of agony erupted from its back. Kicking its legs in a frenzied manner, it resumed its rampage. However, its tusks couldn’t reach Ur, who, positioned on its back, was out of its reach. His intuition had been correct. The back of the Great Tusked Boar, enveloped in thick flesh, was not a vulnerable spot, but it provided a safe zone.

“………..!!!!……..!!!!” -Ur

Ur had no time to comprehend this, unfortunately. He was currently desperately struggling not to be thrown off the thrashing boar’s back. He clung to his sword, barely managing to stay alive.

“I’m going!” -Woman

In that instant, upon hearing the girl’s voice, Ur released both hands. Whether he was thrown off or jumped off himself was unclear. He was thrown to the ground. Though disoriented, he crawled away from the boar’s presence without getting back on his feet.

“【Fireball! 】”  -Woman

And in the next moment, the girl unleashed her magic.

It was the same fireball as before, but clearly larger and more powerful. The flickering flames shot straight toward the boar and exploded.

“BUGYAAAAAAA!??”

Fire enveloped the area. Intense flames burned the body of the Great Tusked Boar. This was the first time Ur had witnessed a proper offensive magic spell, and he was astonished by its potency. The flames were so intense that just being near them would cause burns, and they steadily robbed the Great Tusked Boar of its life.

However, it still stood.

“You’re tough as hell!” -Ur

Ur dashed forward. At this point, there was no option to flee. He didn’t have the stamina to run away, nor did the exhausted girl who had just finished casting the spell.

A half-hearted retreat would lead to death. Therefore, there was only one choice left.

“I’ll kill you…!” -Ur

Ur gripped the other ceremonial sword he had concealed behind his back and charged. The Great Tusked Boar was still consumed by flames and not aware of Ur’s presence. Seizing the opportunity, Ur thrust the sword with all his might.

Directly at its small eye.

“GIIIIIII!??”

The blade pierced deeply into the unprotected vital spot, hidden beneath the tough skin.

“DIEE…!” -Ur

Ur poured his entire strength into the hilt of the sword that had impaled the eye. He kicked the ground with both feet, strained his arms, and thrust forward. Something tore, shattered, and a sound of gouging reverberated through Ur.

“…GA…GI…”

And thus, the Great Tusked Boar, with the sword driven deep into its skull, finally ceased its movements.

“It’s dead,” Ur thought, but as soon as that thought crossed his mind, the boar’s body began to disintegrate. The body, created by the dungeon, melted away, and the dungeon itself had lost its core, its fate mirroring that of the boar.

In the place where the Great Tusked Boar had been, a magic stone twice the size of the magic stone of the goblin rolled over. Ur had no energy left to pick it up; he just stared at it.

“…Is it over?” -Woman

The girl, her voice reflecting exhaustion, asked for confirmation. Blood flowed from her forehead, and her robe was torn, revealing her arm dripping with blood. She must have been grazed by the boar’s tusks. That was enough to cause her current state.

“You good…?” -Ur

“Rather than myself, are you okay?” -Woman

Ur realized that, in fact, he looked far worse than the girl. Covered in scratches and blood, his entire body was a mess. And the moment he became aware of it, excruciating pain surged through his body. The excitement he had experienced earlier had numbed him to some extent, but now pain and fatigue hit Ur all at once.

“To be honest, I’m far from okay.” -Ur

“Shall I use healing magic?” -Woman

“Can you?” -Ur

“…I’m sorry, but I’ve run out of magical power.” -Woman

“Thanks for getting my hopes up.” -Ur

Ur sighed and sat down near the collapsed girl. Now that the dungeon had lost its core, no more monsters would emerge. And with the loss of the core, Ur had once again lost his means of repaying his debts. A combination of relief and futility delivered a double blow, sapping Ur’s energy. He needed some rest.

Then he noticed that the girl beside him was staring at him intently. Ignoring her and resting seemed like a good idea, but he was feeling restless doing nothing.

“What…?” -Ur

“Thank you very much for helping me.” -Woman

“You’re welcome.” -Ur

“I want to express my gratitude somehow. Is there anything I could do?” -Woman

“Give me money.” -Ur

“I have none. I’m naked.” -Woman

“Well, never mind then… Ahhh, damn, what a waste of time. Can someone comfort me?” -Ur

“Shall I pat your head?” -Woman

“I’d prefer you to grope those big breasts of yours.” -Ur

“Shall I let you?” -Woman

“Just kidding…” -Ur

Exhausted and staring at the dim ceiling, Ur finally, at that moment, realized.

“…What’s your name?” -Ur

“My name is Shizuku. And yours?” -Shizuku

“It’s Ur.” -Ur

And so, the young Ur boy’s encounter with a girl named Shizuku marked the end of their first dungeon conquest and the vanquishing of its 「Ruler」.

Ur’s impression after completing the conquest was simple: 「Never again」.

Unfortunately, this wish would not come true.
